Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game

In massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), the gamer embodies an avatar (fictional character) in a very large environment. Even if the avatar is free to move in his world, he often has quests to complete. The interesting part of that kind of game is that it's massively multiplayer, meaning that the game will take place in an environment that can accommodate thousands of players simultaneously.

In this type of video game, the avatar acts in a virtual persistent world, meaning it will continue its development even when the player is not connected. This characteristic makes the MMORPG more intense and addictive.

Multiplayer games started by connecting several computers together in LAN (local area network). But only a few dozen players could play simultaneously and it required a location where players would meet physically to play.

When the games became connected to the Internet, they became massively multiplayer. It allowed players to easily connect and play with a multitude of other players from around the world.
