Guilds are historically associations of craftsmen in particular trades. However, when it comes to MMORPGs, guilds - or clans - simply mean groups of players that play together online, allying against ennemies that can be either other humans or controlled by the server. Players

Many gamers join guilds in order to socialize beyond just playing a game, and when geographically close may meet in real life as well.

Guilds are more formally organised than communities, and there can ben many guilds within a community.
